NORML Students Seeking Educations at CofC

College of Charleston students marched, drummed, and chanted in opposition to the current campus policy toward marijuana. Kent a CofC NORML organizer says "the new drug policy requires a minimum of one suspension for the possession of any amount of marijuana; grouping it together in one category with harder drugs and intolerable acts such as theft, arson, and sexual misconduct." Two years ago students living in dorms were subject to losing on-campus housing but not suspension from school.

Other students like Gray compared the cost of mid-semester suspension to a $7,000 fine while South Carolina Law has a $200 fine for simple possession of marijuana.

"It is important to remain in solidarity with those who have been removed from this campus. They are prime examples of interested and passionate individuals whose only crime was the use of nature. We are their support base and we must remember their trials and tribulations as a draconian regulation was inflicted upon them." ~Allston

"If this policy had been in effect two years ago I would not be a student here right now. I was kicked out of the dorm for paraphernalia charges my freshman year. While that punishment was severe, and made life and school very difficult for the following semester, it is not nearly as bad as the current policy." ~Kent

"Fifty years ago it was illegal for African Americans to eat in most restaurants. Trespassing laws were used to oppress an entire community. Those laws were changed because laws are not always right. The African American populations represented one eighth of the United States populations at the time. We represent over one third of the United States population and nearly half of the population of this college.* It is time for marijuana users and sympathizers alike to have our voice heard." ~Gray
