Events and Legislative Update

Date: March 4th 2008

Once again my old cell phone bought the farm; it was well worn prior to kissing the payment at high speed. If you want me to have your number send me an email with your name and number(s). My new phone can talk to my computer and backup the numbers. ~FF

1) SC Legislative Update: 4MAR2008

Our Poker Run Bill has died for the session. the churches lobbied to get right to have lotteries and effectively made illegal works of other charities using games of chance. Lobby your elect officials and church leaders to improve our odds next year.

Tethered-dog bill passed from committee to the senate floor where it is expected to pass a third reading. Animal lovers packed the room and that made the difference of its passage. Only fools or wimps play nice (and lose) if you care about a bill pack the committee hearings every time! However on a bright note my Senator did work to amend the bill to be more reasonable.

Our red light bill still faces a lot of opposition despite 9 other states passing the same legislation since we began pushing our version. Please help Reb and other pass this bill. it might take another session or two yet but we will win.

Special thanks to Ralph Bell for taking time away from his business to lobby and report back for all of us. ~FF

For Immediate Release:
ABATE of Wisconsin Inc Lobby Day
Eight buses bringing bikers to the Capitol from all over Wisconsin

On Tuesday March 4th, 2008 members and supporters of ABATE of Wisconsin, the motorcycle issue experts, will be converging at the Capitol from all over the state in a grass-roots lobbying effort. We will be introducing our 2008 legislative agenda as we get re-acquainted with our legislators in Madison.

ABATE of Wisconsin (A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments) is a motorcyclists’ rights organization dedicated to freedom of the road. Our 2008 legislative agenda will aggressively seek to end health-care discrimination toward bikers in this state. A loophole in the wording of HIPPA currently allows health-care insurance providers to discriminate against motorcyclists by not compensating them when they are injured while riding a motorcycle.

This agenda also seeks to amend language in recently passed Wisconsin Act 466 that was intended to both properly punish and educate drivers that commit a right-of-way violation which causes a motorcycle crash that involves serious injury or death. The original intent of this law was to increase right of way violation penalties and make a motorcycle awareness class mandatory for offenders. Since this law took effect in October of 2006, to date, we have no information of any increased penalties being issued or classes being taken.

ABATE of Wisconsin Inc will be staffing an information and registration center at Inn on the Park (22 S. Carroll St.) from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Members and supporters will gather there to receive information and materials to distribute during their visits regarding our legislative agenda which also includes our newly introduced anti-impaired riding campaign and our comprehensive motorcycle awareness campaign, before attending their scheduled appointments at the Capitol building.

For more information, or to set up an interview, please contact Public Relations Director Dave Charlebois at the numbers above or go to www.abatewis.org.

ABATE of Wisconsin’s goal is to give the motorcyclists’ of Wisconsin a strong, united voice, with regard to their future, their way of life, their safety and their legal rights as motorcyclists and citizens.
