DOT board adopts repair strategy
Staff report
Tuesday, August 14, 2007
The state Transportation Commission recently adopted a "fix it first" strategy, which would direct federal funds to pavement preservation, bridge replacement and safety initiatives.
The seven-member commission, which governs the state Department of Transportation, voted unanimously on the plan Friday at its August meeting at Coastal Carolina University. The plan is based on $632 million expected in the upcoming fiscal year, which begins in October.
"I applaud the SCDOT Commission for its foresight and vision to improve the safety of South Carolina's infrastructure system, in light of the recent tragedy that occurred in Minnesota which is still unfolding," Transportation Secretary H.B. "Buck" Limehouse Jr. said in a statement.
Resurfacing existing highways will see funds increased to $93 million from $48 million. The Bridge Replacement Program will increase from $71 million to $125 million. In the safety category, funds will be increased from $22 million to $26 million.
